The Ottawa Curling Club honours World Champions Team Homan

On Friday, June 21, 2024 The Ottawa Curling Club celebrated an amazing season from the exceptional Team Homan! The Club was filled with support by the curling community and invited guests. Local dignitaries were in attendance to support our sport - Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden and Ottawa Centre MP Yasir Naqvi. The OCC’s Sheet Sponsors Anatomy Physiotherapy, Moosehead, Conway Litigation, Curtis Fillier from The YOW Home Team, and Dominion City Brewing Company joined us and continue to show their support. The OCC’s largest rental league and one of Canada’s largest LGBTQ2S+ friendly league, the Rainbow Rockers Curling League’s President, Steve Horwood, along with many of its members were also in attendance. We were also fortunate to have Curling Canada representatives including CEO Nolan Thiessan, the Ottawa Valley Curling Association Chair Paul Hennessey, and representatives from CurlON including Chair Rick Thurston, who also presented Team Homan with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to unveiling Team Homan’s National Championship banner, the OCC wanted to recognize Team Homan’s exceptional accomplishments with Lifetime Membership to the Ottawa Curling Club. Rachel Homan & Emma Miskew received this honour in advance of the 2018 Olympic Games and now Tracy Fleury & Sarah Wilkes are part of our Club’s history.

It is also important to note that the first all-women Executive Team in the Club's storied history was able to recognize and celebrate women in sport. The Club worked very hard on this event so special thank you to President Nicole Merriman, Vice-President Alex Birtwistle, and Club Manager Dalal Abou-Eid. We would also like to thank Board Member Ian Rathwell for his hardwork on the event.

Team Homan’s celebration did not stop at the OCC on Friday - at City Hall, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe presented Team Homan the Key to the City, the City’s highest and most prestigious honour. The Ottawa Curling Club was thrilled to celebrate in this special day.

Team Homan’s 2023-24 season was nothing short of spectacular, boasting a 67-7 record, including seven wins in ten events. The team’s dominance was further underscored by their remarkable 24-1 combined record at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Worlds, culminating in Canada’s first world curling title since 2018.

WAY TO GO TEAM CANADA!
We cannot wait to add the World’s banner to our Club walls in the near future.
